I Sometimes Wonder If BTS Knows How Much They've Changed Our Lives
Lisa Barnes
I sometimes wonder…
I sometimes wonder if the seven men who make up BTS (Bangtan Sonyeondan), the global band from South Korea with one of the largest international fandoms ever built, truly understand the impact they've had on the lives of their older fans.
Many of their songs were written for people in their own generation. As teenagers and young adults themselves, they spoke to the hopes, fears, and struggles of their peers. What they couldn't have known was that those same lyrics would one day resonate just as deeply with millions of women from different generations around the world.
Did they ever imagine their music would inspire someone to change careers? To become a more present parent? To strengthen a marriage? To help someone rediscover joy after years of simply surviving? Spend enough time in ARMY spaces, and you'll find countless stories from fans who credit BTS with changing the trajectory of their lives in ways both large and small.
As members of the social media generation, BTS have built something remarkable: meaningful relationships with millions of fans across the globe that have endured for more than a decade. Yet I often wonder how many of these personal stories they have the opportunity to read. Hidden within social media posts, fan letters, and conversations are deeply personal accounts that reveal the extraordinary influence they've had—not simply as artists, but as people whose message has encouraged others to grow, heal, and live more authentically.
Those stories are the inspiration behind many of the pieces I create.
